  Chapter 1

THE ATTACK in Kirby Park was the first time Heavenly Hawk had ever seen Captain Alpha bleed. In the beginning, it had seemed like it would be a routine battle until it all went wrong. Before she received the call, Heavenly Hawk had been dreaming of a mysterious man making love to her.

She floated on what felt like a cloud, moaning as the mysterious stranger lay on top of her. Her hands roamed his muscular back, feeling him flex as he thrust his thickness into her over and over again. She wanted to kiss him and whisper his name, but she could never find his face or hear his voice, only that he knew how to please her in ways she'd never dreamed. When the faceless man brought her to the edge, she was left gasping in pleasure as she came.

She opened her eyes, still shuddering from the orgasm as it faded. She lay in afterglow, looking up at the ceiling of her apartment, thinking about it for a long time. She had been having more and more of these dreams lately. She thought it might be her extrasensory powers telling her something, but wasn't sure what. She never saw the face of the mysterious man in her dreams, but she knew it couldn't be Captain Alpha.

A painting of a hawk on the wall of her bedroom glowed red. That was the signal.

She quickly changed into her powered form and dressed in her costume before rushing off to the Watchtower. The alert turned out to be a call from the police commissioner of Eros City.

When she had gathered with her other team members, they put Commissioner Ross on the main screen of their base. He seemed almost calm. "We've got a situation on Eisner Island. Poundcake and Speed Freak are tearing apart Kirby Park."

The Night Watchman narrowed his eyes through the lenses of his black helmet as he spoke in his gravelly voice. "That's unusual for them. They've never teamed up before. And Poundcake has never been the kind for pointless violence."

Heavenly Hawk smiled as she patted him on the shoulder. "Only you would take the time to psychoanalyze them before you even threw a punch, Watchman."

The motors in Watchman's armor whined as he stood up. "Understanding your enemy is more important than fighting them, Hawk."

  Hawk giggled. "So you say."

Captain Alpha exchanged a look with Heavenly Hawk and the Night Watchman before nodding. "We're on our way, Commissioner."

As the screen went black, the three heroes stood up and headed for the exit of the Watchtower, their base of operations. Well, technically, it was the Night Watchman's base but when the three of them decided to work together as the Trinity, the Watchtower became their home as well.

On the way, Heavenly Hawk gave Captain Alpha a kiss. "For luck."

Captain Alpha shook his head. "You know I don't need luck. I've been doing this longer than you've been alive."

She hugged his arm as they walked. "I know. But I'm getting a bad feeling about this."

She really was. She didn't know if it was an unknown power or just intuition, but Heavenly Hawk tended to have a sense of impending danger. Sometimes, it let her dodge bullets. Other times, it just kept her from making wrong moves.

This time, it felt like they were all headed for their own deaths.

Captain Alpha sneered. "It's just your imagination. Stop being so emotional."

She didn't mention it anymore. She knew he didn't think much of female superheroes, anyway.

That reminded her she needed to have a talk with him when they got back.

The Night Watchman followed closely behind them as they headed to the huge circle of glass on one wall, glass that showed the reverse of the massive clock face on the other side.

When the clock swung open, Heavenly Hawk took to the skies with the massive wings on her back beating the air. Captain Alpha just thrust his fists ahead of himself and sailed alongside her, propelled by his force fields. The Night Watchman flew behind both of them on his jetpack, black cape flapping in the wind.

Eisner Island was the economic and administrative hub of Eros City, connected to the rest of the metropolis by three rivers surrounding the island. As they flew across the sprawling city, the Trinity could already see balls of flame rising from Kirby Park. Men and women ran through the streets, screaming as loud booms like thunder carried across the city.

When the park came into sight, Hawk could already see why.

What looked like a little girl in a frilly pink dress stood in the parking lot. Though the girl stood less than five feet tall, Heavenly Hawk knew she was actually in her early twenties. Her short size also stood out from the way she easily picked up a Honda Odyssey and hurled it into a Toyota, causing both to explode.

Heavenly Hawk could hear Poundcake giggling as she called out, "That was so pretty! Let's see another."

She skipped over to another car and hoisted it onto her shoulder.

As they came to the park, a five-year old boy stood on the curb, looking up at the branches of a tree. He waved to Captain Alpha as the hero landed next to him. "Cap! Cap! My cat's stuck in the tree."

Captain Alpha waved the boy off. "We have more important things to handle, son."

The boy looked like he was about to cry.

Heavenly Hawk looked at Poundcake for a moment before flying up into the branches, grabbing a small white kitten, and dropping it into the boy's arms.

The boy hugged the cat. "Thank you!"

She nodded and flew on to the park. She made a mental note to talk to Captain Alpha about his people skills. A good percentage of Eros City already thought of him as arrogant, according to the latest polls. She'd already talked to him hundreds of times about public service to turn the city more on his side, but he just wouldn't listen.

The Night Watchman struck first, aiming his left fist at Poundcake and firing a small grenade from it.

The grenade bounced on the asphalt next to her before exploding. Poundcake squealed as she went flying, crashed into a parked car,
caving in the side, but sat up without a scratch.

Captain Alpha landed on the pavement next to her as she struggled to get up and folded his arms. "All right, Poundcake, what are you after?"

The Night Watchman landed next to him, glaring at her through glowing lenses. "All this mindless destruction isn't like you. Who put you up to this?"

Wisps of smoke rose from Poundcake's dress as she stood up and smiled up at them. "Oh, you'll find out soon enough, Night Pants."

Before Captain Alpha could open his mouth, a blur rushed by him and knocked him back. He landed on a light pole, snapping it in half.

The blur came again, but it stopped in front of him to become a wiry man in a red bodysuit. The man's eyes and arms twitched as he broke into wild laughter.

"Sorry, Captain Enema," the man cackled, "you're not gonna like the answer."

He turned into a flurry of punches that pounded Captain Alpha on all sides. None of them did any damage, thanks to Alpha's force field, but he still stumbled and collapsed from the impacts.

The thin man took off at high speed, laughing as he went, and disappeared.

The Night Watchman charged at Poundcake. "Alpha and I will take her, Hawk. You handle Speed Freak."

Poundcake braced her hands on her hips and pouted. "Aw, you guys are gonna beat up on a girl? Naughty, naughty."

She swung a fist that dented Watchman's armor in the chest, and sent him flying.

"Give it up!" Captain Alpha charged her with a punch enhanced by his force field that knocked her back.

As the three of them fought, Heavenly Hawk focused on the park around her. With her hawk-vision, she was the only one who could see the hyper-fast Speed Freak before he could strike. Just barely.

There. She caught sight of a red blur moving through the trees, headed right for her.

"Nice try." She beat her powerful wings, creating a tornado that swept at the treeline. The winds tore at Speed Freak who became visible as he spun up into the air.

  "Motherfucker!" Speed Freak yelled.

She rushed forward as fast as her wings could carry her to punch Speed Freak out of the sky.

As he tumbled down to the ground, she swept him up in another tornado. She had to keep him airborne. Without being able to touch the ground, he couldn't run away.

She punched him again, but a loud boom caught her attention.

Captain Alpha and the Night Watchman still fought Poundcake and had her on the ground. It looked like Alpha used his force field to pin her to the ground. The Night Watchman had pulled out his night-cuffs, strong enough to hold even her.

Neither of them saw the huge silver machine charging out of the trees. It looked like a lion made out of chrome, and that's exactly what it was.

"Look out," Heavenly Hawk yelled while throwing her tornado at the robot.

  Too late.

The lion leaped onto Captain Alpha's back. He stumbled from the sudden weight, and the lion sank its metal teeth into his shoulder.

Alpha threw the mechanical animal off easily, and Hawk thought of how futile the creature's gesture had been. By now, everyone knew that nothing could get through Captain Alpha's force field.

That's why she gasped as blood ran down from his torn shoulder. Even Captain Alpha seemed shocked, just staring at the wound before he collapsed.

"No!" Heavenly Hawk threw herself forward to fly to his side.

But she only realized she had turned her back on Speed Freak when she felt fists pounding her so fast that it felt like he punched her everywhere at the same time. She fell from the sky, slammed into the pavement, and tried to get up, but couldn't. In the fraction of a second she had laid on the ground, a rope had been wound around her arms, wings, and legs.

Speed Freak stood in front of her, cackling. "Hang loose, baby."

He patted the bulge of her breasts under her white uniform, making them jiggle.

She wanted to tear his hands off, but she couldn't break the ropes. They were made of a metal that even her wings couldn't break. Considering her wings could bend steel, that said something.

The Night Watchman lay on the parking lot across from her. His armor had been crumpled like a tin can, and she knew he had to be either severely mangled or dead inside it.

Poundcake stood over him, flexing her tiny arms. "Ta-da, we win!"

Heavenly Hawk looked to Captain Alpha.

He crawled on his hands and knees, gasping in pain. It wasn't just the bite. Something was wrong.

A booming laugh carried across the park. She looked up at a couple run out of the trees on all fours. The man and woman both had dark skin, pointed ears on the top of their heads, and tails winding behind them. One wore a black leather bodysuit, torn on the arms and legs, and a spiked collar around her neck. The other wore a white lab coat.

The one in the lab coat continued to laugh. "Excellent. You fell for the trap, just as we expected."

"Professor Puma," Heavenly Hawk yelled. "I should have known."

The other feline in the leather put her clawed hands on her hips. "Hey, don't forget about Alley Cat, baby."

Professor Puma reached out a hand, and the mechanical lion padded over to rub against it. "I suppose you're wondering about your boyfriend, Captain Alpha."

  Captain Alpha collapsed.

Hawk's wings strained at the metal ropes as she screamed. "What have you done to him?"

Professor Puma chuckled. "My little pet Lion's teeth are coated with tellurium, which my research showed is capable of disrupting Captain Alpha's field for a fraction of a second. Long enough for Lion's teeth to inject him with a deadly poison. Of which there is, of course, no known antidote."

He narrowed his yellow eyes at the groaning Captain Alpha. "I could, of course, have killed him much more quickly but I thought a slow and painful death would be more fitting for someone who has caused me so much irritation over the years."

  "No," Hawk screamed.

"Yes." A slow rumble carried along with the booming voice.

The parking lot cracked open before erupting like a volcano. Instead of lava, a fat man in a black uniform rose out of the ground, standing on a huge boulder that lifted him up into the air.

The heavyset man had his arms raised as he yelled in a deep voice, "Yes, we are victorious. We have defeated the Trinity!"

Earthmover. Heavenly Hawk closed her eyes, thinking she should have known the criminal mastermind would be behind the attack. His elemental power over rocks was only matched by his brilliance.

Alley Cat ran over to the armor of Night Watchman lying nearby and kicked his armored leg. "Hey, ain't you got any shit to say?"

She leaned down to look through the helmet before calling out, "This fucking thing's empty."

Hawk felt blood trickling down her face. She couldn't believe it. Night Watchman could be cold and distant sometimes, but he would never abandon the team. Would he?

Earthmover scowled. "No matter. We will find him soon. There is nowhere he can run. Nowhere he can hide."

The boulder under Earthmover floated like a magic carpet, carrying him around to face the terrified crowds gathered at the edge of the park. "Hear me, citizens of Eros City. Your champions have fallen. Eisner Island belongs to us now, the Fateful Five. And soon, the entire city will be ours!"

Hawk squeezed her eyes shut as tears oozed from them. This couldn't be happening.

"No one can stop us now!" Earthmover boomed.

  Chapter 2

RYAN WALKER sat in the doctor's office, taking deep breaths to try to stay calm. He knew this might be his last chance to get an ATLAS implant, and he didn't want to blow it.

The door to the office swung open, and the doctor walked in with a smile and a tablet. "Hello, Ryan. Nice to see you again."

Ryan forced himself to smile. "Hi, Doctor Hope."

The doctor sat down, swiped his tablet, and squinted at the screen. "So the last time we talked, you said you were suffering from weakness, muscle fatigue, exhaustion, loss of appetite, a
nd insomnia. We've run a lot of tests, every one I can think of, and we can't seem to find a cause for it."

  Ryan nodded.

The doctor leaned back in his chair. "Ryan, I've seen this quite a few times, and I know what we're dealing with, so I'm just going to be straight with you. It looks to me like you're fishing for someone to give you an ATLAS implant."

Ryan gasped, once again going through the motions. "Doctor Hope, I'm not sure what gave you that--"

"Save it." The doctor's smile vanished as he stood up to close the blinds on the windows. "There's no one listening, so we can dispense with the charade."

He sat down and leaned forward to give Ryan a heavy-lidded look. "If you want a black-market ATLAS implant, it's going to cost you one million dollars."

Ryan's eyes almost popped out of his head. "Really? Wow,r

"That's right. They don't come cheap, you know. Do you have that kind of money?"

Ryan sighed. "No. I guess I just wanted to know how much it would cost. I figured I couldn't afford it, but it couldn't hurt to ask."

"I understand where you're coming from, son, I really do. You're young, you're a bit on the thin side, and you look on the Internet and see all these superheroes, and you want to be one, too. Or maybe you want to be a supervillain. I don't judge. But it's a lot more complicated than that."

Ryan knew all that. He had looked up the whole history of ATLAS on the Internet, how it could unlock secret powers and abilities, and made you stronger and bigger. ATLAS stood for Advanced Targeted Latent Ability System, and was developed by the military in the 1940s when it was first used to make Captain Alpha and National Guardian. They were joined by other heroes who helped turned the tide of World War II, and others went on to become superheroes and supervillains over the decades.

Only certain people had the genes to activate an ATLAS implant. If you didn't have the genes, nothing happened. Even if you had the right genes, only thirty percent survived the procedure and those people developed special abilities. Super-powers. The other seventy percent who got implanted burned up in spontaneous combustion.
